Medical Device Testing Application for Helium
The V.I.C. MS-40 was selected to test an implantable device used as a Ventricular Assist System in patients with a weakened heart.
The HeartWare HVAD® pump is designed to help a patient's weakened heart pump blood throughout his or her body by removing blood from the left side of the heart and pumping the blood into the aorta (the large blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body).
Using the V.I.C. MS-40 the two pump halves are tested individually to ensure there are no leaks. Once the pump is assembled, the HVAD is tested as a working unit with a leak rate specification of 1.8^-8 atm cc/sec.
The MS-40 will allow the manufacturer to test for leaks in medical devices as small as 4x10^-11 atm cc/sec. The unit senses leaks by nondestructively introducing device to a vacuum and utilizing specially tuned mass spectrometer to detect even the smallest amount of Helium leakage.
The MS-40 is high performance, high sensitivity portable helium leak detector which can be used for testing the hermeticity of implantables as well as a host of other medical devices. More on the MS-40

The MS-50 Dry utilized for Space Applications
NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) in Cleveland, OH is developing advanced space-rated vacuum seals in support of future space exploration missions. These seals must have extremely low leak rates to ensure that astronauts have sufficient breathable air for missions to the International Space Station or the Moon.
NASA GRC is performing leak tests on candidate seal 
designs using the MS-50 Dry helium leak detector to demonstrate that the seals satisfy stringent leak rate requirements.
This MS-50 Dry was selected because it is capable of accurate and repeatable gross leak testing at levels up to 1x10^-2 atm-cc/sec.

Automotive Lithium-Ion Battery Leak Testing Systems
